accommodation
Finding accommodation in Finland is a straightforward process, with the country known for its safety and stability. Apartments here are more affordable compared to many other European countries, and student housing is well-maintained and conveniently located near city centers or accessible via public transportation. The key to securing accommodation is to start searching early, ideally right after receiving your residence permit, as demand is highest at the beginning of each academic year.
Most university towns offer student housing foundations with online booking systems for new students, providing affordable options close to campus. If you’re unable to secure student housing upon arrival, temporary accommodation options like student hostels are available while you wait for an apartment offer.
Additionally, private market apartments are always an option, though rents may be slightly higher. Forenom and Airbnb offer alternative accommodation solutions suitable for short-term stays, providing fully furnished apartments and private rooms across Finland. As partners with Forenom, Edunation can offer incoming students discounted rental prices, ensuring a smooth transition to life in Finland.
After Graduation
Following graduation, students have the opportunity to apply for a 2-year residence permit in Finland, enabling them to seek employment in the country. Securing an extended residence permit necessitates applying while the student residence permit remains valid. To enhance post-graduation job prospects, it’s imperative to accumulate work experience during studies, ideally through internships and part-time positions, often serving as a pathway to full-time employment.
Once employed, applying for a work-based residence permit in Finland is a straightforward process, given the prevalent labor shortages across various professional domains, with companies actively scouting for new talent.
Eligibility for a permanent residence permit is attainable after four years of continuous residence in Finland. A recent legislative amendment now incorporates time spent under a study residence permit toward this four-year prerequisite. Furthermore, forming familial or other ties during one’s stay in Finland bolsters the likelihood of securing permanent residency status.
